China–Laos Railway Entry Procedures: Visa & Checkpoint Checklist

Scope: travelers entering Lao PDR via the international China–Laos passenger railway in 2026. Maintained by VisaGov.la for process clarity. Contact: +856 20 9999 7573 · contact@66visa.com · Harmony Hotel · visagov.la · /laos-visas/.

1. Traffic context (informational)

Use these figures only for queue planning—not as legal authority:

  • Cross-border passenger trips: approximately 244,000 in January–August 2026 (about +50% year-on-year per railway operator reporting relayed in Global Times / TV BRICS)
  • Cumulative international passenger operations: thousands of trains since the April 2023 launch of Kunming South–Vientiane services
  • Peak summer clearances at Mohan: 57,000+ travelers in the July–early September 2026 window
  • National tourism outlook: 5–6 million visitors targeted for 2026 (KPL / Tourism Laos sector messaging), with Chinese arrivals projected near 2 million

Higher volume increases average wait time at Mohan/Boten. Arrive earlier than domestic Chinese rail habits suggest.

2. Pre-departure decision tree

“` Nationality eligible for eVisa/VOA? ├─ YES → Choose eVisa (preferred if port designated) OR VOA (if port issues it) └─ NO → Embassy/consular visa before travel “`

Then:

“` Is your entry checkpoint eVisa-designated? ├─ YES → Carry approval letter + same passport └─ NO → Do not rely on eVisa; use VOA or embassy visa as applicable “`

Finally:

“` Stay intended ≤30 days? ├─ YES → Tourist channel sufficient └─ NO → Plan extension(s) or evaluate LA-B2 if purpose is employment “`

3. Document checklist (print and tick)

  1. Passport (validity preferably >180 days from arrival; many carriers enforce six months)
  2. At least two blank pages
  3. Visa approval letter or VOA eligibility confirmation for your nationality
  4. Train ticket / itinerary (digital + offline screenshot)
  5. One backup photograph (VOA size habits vary; 4×6 / 3×4 spares help)
  6. LDIF submission confirmation if checkpoint requires digital arrival card
  7. Accommodation address in Laos (Latin script)
  8. Contact number reachable offline
  9. Onward or return plan summary
  10. Emergency contact: VisaGov.la WhatsApp +856 20 9999 7573

4. Timing schedule

  • T-21 to T-14: Confirm nationality channel — Traveler
  • T-14 to T-7: Submit eVisa if used; monitor approval — Traveler
  • T-7: Verify checkpoint still accepts chosen channel — Traveler
  • T-3 to T-0: Complete LDIF if required — Traveler
  • T-0 boarding: Re-check passport number matches approval — Traveler
  • T-0 Mohan: Budget 50+ minutes customs; more at peaks — Traveler
  • T+0 Boten: Obtain Lao entry stamp; photograph it — Traveler
  • T+25 days: If staying longer, open extension case — Traveler / VisaGov.la

5. Checkpoint notes

  • Mohan (China): Exit China / rail port — Follow Chinese exit formalities; allow buffer
  • Boten (Laos): Enter Laos — Present visa docs; obtain entry stamp
  • Intermediate Lao stations: Domestic continuation — Entry already completed at border
  • Vientiane Station: Arrival city — No second visa issuance—stamp must already exist

Exact booth layout can change; follow posted signs and staff instructions. Do not leave the controlled area without an entry stamp.

6. Stay counting and extension link

  • Tourist stay: up to 30 days from Lao arrival stamp (not from eVisa approval-letter issue date)
  • Extensions: up to two in-country for eligible tourist visas
  • Assisted extension via VisaGov.la: approximately USD 90
  • See companion article: Laos visa extension procedure

Failure to extend inside allowed windows can trigger substantial fines and removal. Advisory summaries (e.g. GOV.UK) reference severe penalties if stays are not regularised—treat deadlines as hard stops.

7. If purpose is employment

Do not enter as a tourist intending to work. Open an LA-B2 file with employer quota documents. Invitation preparation is approximately 5 working days on the assistance side when inputs are complete. Service levels commonly referenced: USD 640 (developed), USD 840 (India & developing); renewals approximately USD 540. Low-developed nationality new applications are not a standard product.

Work-permit and stay-permit steps follow visa issuance. Sequence matters; tourist extensions cannot substitute for labour status.

8. Incident protocol

  • eVisa port mismatch — Request VOA only if eligible; expect possible non-refund of eVisa fee
  • Passport number mismatch — High denial risk—preventable only before travel
  • Missing LDIF — Complete if connectivity allows; expect delay
  • Passport validity short — May be refused boarding or entry—renew before travel
  • Unsure eligibility — WhatsApp +856 20 9999 7573 before boarding
  • Stamp unclear/missing — Do not leave immigration hall; request correction

9. Evidence pack to retain until exit

  • eVisa approval PDF or VOA fee receipt
  • Clear photo of entry stamp
  • Train ticket QR / stub
  • LDIF confirmation screenshot
  • Hotel invoice matching declared address
  • Extension receipts if applicable

Consistent documents reduce secondary-inspection time.

10. Post-arrival services map

  • Longer holiday: Tourist extension assist — ~USD 90
  • Job start: LA-B2 pathway — from USD 640 / 840
  • Colleague visit: Invitation letter — ~5 workdays
  • General questions: WhatsApp triage — +856 20 9999 7573
